Edward Ellis was the second child of Edwin Ellis & Hannah Hemmet born Oct-December 1874 at Ripley, Derbyshire.
In 1881 Edward & his parents were living at 166 Primrose Hill, Blackwell, Derbyshire with his 3 brothers & 1 sister.
By 1891 Edward was still living at home at 5 Court 1, London Rd, St Peter, Derby. Edward & his brother Walter were both shoe finishers.
Edward enlisted in the Yorkshire Light Infantry at Pontefract on October 15th 1892 & he gave his occupation as shoe finisher. He was 5ft 9 and a half inches tall with brown eyes & black hair. Edward reached the rank of sergeant & after serving in South Africa, Malta, Crete, Gt Britain & Ireland, he was discharged on October 11th, 1913. During his service he was awarded the South African Medal with clasps, the Cape Colony &Transvaal & Kings Medal with 2 clasps & a medal for Long Service & Good Conduct with a Gratuity of £5.
During his time in Malta, Edward married Barbara Ellen Critchell at Holy Trinity, Sliema on February 27th, 1903. Edward & Barbara adopted a daughter, Ruby Kathleen Robson who was born on August 21st, 1909 at Aldershot.
With the commencement of WW1 Edward reenlisted with the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on September 25th, 1914. He served at home until September 10th, 1915, then in France until October 11th, 1916 & then at home again until February 22nd, 1919 when he was demobilised, giving his address as 131 Langsett Rd, Sheffield. During his second term of service Edward was award the 1915 Star.
Barbara died in 1925 & was buried February 25th at Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield.
